Hoburne 5 - Sunday 5th October 2008

On a wet and windy Sunday morning, runners could not be blamed for staying in bed and pulling the duvet over their heads! Instead, 129 out of an entry of 154, completed the race and got thoroughly soaked!
Nigel Leighton glided over the surface water to win the race in an impressive time of 25.50, pushing Lee Rodriguez of Poole Runners into second place (26.01). Tom Penfold of White Horse Harriers was third (26.06) and Poole Runner's George Miller was 4th (26.44).
Runningtree Series leader, Ian White of Bournemouth A.C. kept up the pressure on his rivals with a 5th place finish (26.59). Mark Hargraves of Bournemouth A.C. was first Male Vet 40 in a time of 27.52 and 8th overall.

First lady home was Charlotte Penfold, again of Bournemouth A.C. and 16th overall with a time of 30.07. Her nearest rival was Caroline Stanzel, Poole Runners (34.03). Jacqueline Smith of Reading Road Runners was 1st Lady Vet 40 category but was surprised by her time of 30.52! Her actual time was 36.39 which still qualified her for the prize. There was a confusion with the race numbers involving her husband Mark and his was the earlier time!

What a relief!

Following last years "short course" problem, the organisers were relieved that the race went off without a hitch. The recent spell of wet and windy weather gave way for a few hours and the runners enjoyed perfect conditions. The race was won by James Baker of Chichester R.C. in a time of 26.41 with Rob McTaggart of Bournemouth A.C. second (27.06). Justin Reeson (unattached) was third (29.04). Justin was also the first Male Vet. 40.

Amanda Bailey, Wimborne A.C was the first lady in a time of 32.19. Sharna King was second (33.33) and K Sherrin third (34.00).

There were 191 entrants and 168 finishers - which included Hoburne Park Manager, Wayne Clarke who walked the course, having raised approximately £700 in sponsorship. Well done Wayne!

Macmillan Cancer Relief will be this years benifactors and it is anticipated that a cheque in the region of £2,000 will be finally presented to them.
